Flight cancellation: the complete guide to your rights
When the airline cancels your flight to or from Israel, Israeli law may set fixed compensation of ₪1,530-₪3,670 per eligible passenger. This comes in addition to your right to choose between a ticket refund and an alternative flight, subject to the conditions and exceptions in the law. Want to cancel a booking yourself? That is a different law, with its own cancellation window and fee. Here are all the rules, amounts and exceptions, updated for 2026.

The airline cancelled your flight? These are your rights
Israel's Aviation Services Law (2012) applies to flights to and from Israel. It gives a passenger whose flight was cancelled three separate rights:
- A refund or an alternative ticket, your choice. The airline or tour operator that announces the cancellation must present these options to you. If it takes away your right to choose, a court may award exemplary damages with a ceiling of ₪12,240, at the court's discretion and if the breach was knowing.
- Assistance: food and drink, communication, and where needed a hotel and transfers.
- Fixed cash compensation, set by flight distance, regardless of the ticket price and in addition to the refund or alternative ticket, when the conditions in the law are met and no exemption applies.
Important: a departure delay of 8 hours or more is treated as a cancellation (section 1 of the law), even if the flight did take off in the end.
How much compensation for a cancelled flight?
The amounts are set in the First Schedule of the law, per passenger:
- Flights of 2,000 km or less: ₪1,530
- Flights of 2,000-4,500 km: ₪2,450
- Flights over 4,500 km: ₪3,670
If the airline offered you an alternative flight that reached your destination only slightly late, the law may set a reduced compensation of 50% instead of the full amount: ₪765 / ₪1,225 / ₪1,835, by distance. Use the compensation calculator to see the amount for your route.
When is there no compensation?
Under section 6 of the law, the cash compensation is not paid in three situations, based on when you were told about the cancellation:
- Notice of 14 days or more before the flight: no cash compensation. You still choose between a refund and an alternative ticket.
- Notice between 7 and 14 days: no compensation only if you were offered an alternative flight that departs no more than 2 hours before the original time and lands no more than 4 hours after it.
- Notice of less than 7 days: no compensation only if the alternative departs no more than 1 hour before and lands no more than 2 hours after.
If you took the alternative and landed close to the original time (2, 3 or 4 hours, by distance), you may be eligible for the reduced compensation of ₪765, ₪1,225, ₪1,835. The airline carries the burden of proving when it gave notice and what alternative it offered.
- "Special circumstances" can also exempt the airline, but the burden of proof is on the airline. A general reference to a security situation does not by itself prove the exemption. The airline must show that the conditions of the exemption were met for your particular flight.
- Other exemptions in the law include a lawful strike and certain Shabbat and holiday situations. In a declared special situation, the Minister may also limit some of these rights by order.
Want to cancel a flight yourself?
This is a completely different track. Here Israel's Consumer Protection Law applies, not the Aviation Services Law. For a booking made remotely (on a website or by phone):
- You can generally cancel within 14 days of making the booking or of receiving the required disclosure document, whichever is later,
- as long as, on the day you cancel, more than 7 days that are not rest days remain before the flight,
- for a cancellation fee of 5% of the price or ₪100, whichever is lower.
Senior citizens (65+), people with a disability and new immigrants (less than 5 years in Israel) may have up to 4 months to cancel, if the booking included a conversation with the business (phone or video counts).
Outside that window, the airline's ticket conditions apply, and they usually mean high cancellation fees. A tip: if the airline significantly changed your flight times, you may have gained the right to cancel without a fee, and sometimes also compensation.
How do you actually claim the compensation?
- Check your eligibility with a quick free flight check.
- Send the airline a reasoned demand with evidence. The law sets 45 days from a written demand to pay the compensation, and 21 days to refund the ticket price.
- No payment? You can file a claim in small claims court. If the court finds a knowing breach, it may also award exemplary damages, at its discretion.
With FlyBack the process is automated and uses timestamped snapshots of the Ben Gurion flight board as evidence. You pay ₪0 upfront, and a success fee only if the compensation is paid. You can check today's disruptions or any flight from the last 4 years. Step by step: how to claim compensation.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if an airline cancels my flight?
You have three rights at the same time. The airline must present options for reaching your destination. You choose between a full refund of the ticket price and an alternative ticket. And, when the conditions are met, the law sets fixed cash compensation by flight distance. While you wait for a flight you are also entitled to assistance (food, communication, and sometimes a hotel). Whether compensation applies depends on when you were told, what alternative was offered, and the exceptions in the law.
How much compensation for a cancelled flight?
₪1,530 for a flight of 2,000 km or less, ₪2,450 for 2,000-4,500 km, and ₪3,670 for over 4,500 km. This is per eligible passenger, regardless of the ticket price, and in addition to the refund or alternative ticket, when the conditions are met: notice of less than 14 days, no alternative within the time limits in the law, and no exemption. The amounts are set in the First Schedule of Israel's Aviation Services Law.
The airline told me about the cancellation in advance. Is there still compensation?
The timing of the notice is one of the main factors. Notice of 14 days or more before the flight rules out cash compensation. Notice of 7-14 days rules it out only if you were offered an alternative that departs no more than 2 hours earlier and lands no more than 4 hours later. With less than a week's notice the alternative must be even closer: 1 hour earlier and 2 hours later. The alternative flight offered and the exemptions in the law must also be checked. In every case you keep the refund or alternative ticket.
How long does the airline have to pay?
The law sets a refund of the ticket price within 21 days of a written demand, and payment of the cash compensation within 45 days. The law does not require the airline to reply as such. If nothing is paid after the deadline, you can file a claim in small claims court. Exemplary damages are possible only if the court finds a knowing breach, at its discretion.
How far back can I claim for a cancelled flight?
4 years back from the flight date (the limitation period). A flight that was cancelled two or three years ago is still worth checking.
I want to cancel a flight I booked. What does the law say?
For a booking made remotely (website or phone), Israel's Consumer Protection Law generally lets you cancel within 14 days of booking or of receiving the required disclosure document, whichever is later, as long as more than 7 days that are not rest days remain before the flight. The cancellation fee is 5% of the price or ₪100, whichever is lower. Senior citizens, people with a disability and new immigrants may have up to 4 months if the booking included a conversation with the business. Outside these windows, the airline's or travel agent's conditions apply.
What is the difference between a refund and compensation?
A refund means getting back what you paid for the ticket (or an alternative ticket, your choice). Compensation is a fixed amount set by law that comes on top of the refund when the airline cancelled the flight. These are two separate rights, and when the conditions for compensation are met, you are entitled to both.
My travel insurance covers cancellations. Why do I need compensation?
These are two completely separate tracks. Travel insurance reimburses proven expenses you actually had, such as a hotel, an alternative flight or essential purchases, subject to your policy's limits and conditions. Where the conditions in the Aviation Services Law are met and no exemption applies, the airline may owe fixed compensation of ₪1,530-₪3,670 per eligible passenger by distance, regardless of your actual expenses and whether or not you have insurance. You cannot be paid twice for the same specific expense, but you can claim the fixed compensation and the expenses your insurance did not cover in parallel.
I lost a hotel, a rental car and attractions because of the cancellation. Can I get that back?
The Aviation Services Law does not require the airline to refund extras you booked separately, such as a hotel, a rental car or attraction tickets. That is what the law says, and we tell you as it is. What you can claim: the fixed compensation by flight distance, per passenger; a refund of the ticket price or an alternative ticket, your choice; and assistance. If the airline failed to provide the assistance it had to provide (such as food or a hotel while you waited), reasonable documented costs for that assistance may be recoverable. Keep all receipts. The rest of the loss is sometimes covered by travel insurance, under the trip cancellation section of the policy.
The disruption was on my return flight to Israel. Does that matter?
Not legally: the law covers flights to and from Israel, so a return flight is covered just like the outbound one. What changes is the evidence. Our main source is the Ben Gurion flight board, which reflects departures from Israel well, but does not always show the exact moment a flight to Israel was delayed or cancelled at the origin airport. We flag these cases for individual review, not an automatic decision.
This is general information, not legal advice. Actual entitlement depends on the circumstances of the flight and the evidence.
